New DC Movies and TV Shows in 2021 and Beyond

As the DC movie universe (or the DCEU as fans have come to call it) prepares to unleash its next wave on fans with Wonder Woman 1984, The Rock’s Black Adam, The Suicide Squad and the long-rumored and actually real Snyder Cut, what better time to catch up on the state of the DC Extended Universe?Unlike Marvel though, DC’s plans don’t include synergy across all mediums. Their movies, while containing many of the same characters, do not cross over with the CW TV-verse that includes The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl, or DC Universe streaming shows like Titans and Doom Patrol. Yes, DC’s betting big and doubling up on their heroes, but the TV realm is another story entirely. However, some recently announced HBO Max exclusives will be direct tie-ins to the DCEU, such as Gotham PD and Peacemaker. And DC Universe is going to become a subscription comics service only, meaning the original shows on that platform will either migrate fully to HBO Max… or go away completely (RIP Swamp Thing). Just FYI!

So let’s take a look at the road ahead for the DCEU. From The Batman to Shazam! Fury of the Gods to Aquaman 2 and beyond, sift through the following slideshow of all of DC’s planned movies and companion HBO Max series (or just read on for a quick list of the titles). Some of these are definitely happening, some are in development, and some have big question marks surrounding them, but all could wind up on the big screen sooner rather than later…

Note: In December, 2020, Warner Bros. announced that in 2021 it will make all 17 of its theatrically-released movies that year available for a one-month exclusive window on HBO Max in addition to their theatrical release. The movies will require no extra cost to HBO Max subscribers.

And of course, all release dates remain subject to change due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

CDC director says community spread of South African strain is here

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that the South African Covid-19 variant, which was just detected in two people in South Carolina, had already reached the point of community spread in the U.S.

“I think one of the concerning things is that we know these two people did not know one another and that they did not travel to South Africa so the presumption is, at this point, that there has been community spread of this strain,” the director, Rochelle Walensky, told Savannah Guthrie on NBC’s “TODAY” show.

Walensky said sequencing of the virus has been “scaled up” under the new administration, meaning there’s more of a chance to catch a new strain.

Because the South African variant was detected on Thursday doesn’t mean it just arrived since the U.S. has lagged greatly behind other countries in tracking changes in the virus by sequencing its genetic code.

Moderna announced this week that its vaccine appears to be less effective against the South African variant, although officials said antibodies remained above protective levels. A Pfizer study, which has not been peer-reviewed, found that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is only slightly less effective against the South African strain.

Meanwhile, an experimental coronavirus vaccine developed by the biotech company Novavax is 89.3 percent effective at preventing Covid-19 but only 49.4 percent effective against the South African strain.

“That has always been our concern that when viruses mutate and they develop strains and dominant strains, they usually do so for some advantage to the virus,” Walensky said. “That may come in the tune of our vaccines not working as well.”

Still, she said, “even a vaccine that has 50-60 percent efficacy is a strong tool in our toolbox to fight this pandemic,” noting that scientists are already working on engineering vaccines based on existing ones that “would be more potent against these strains.”

International Center director raises alarm about Ethiopia’s refugee crisis

Buoyed by a new president who has vowed to dramatically increase the nation’s annual refugee admissions, Executive Director Albert Mbanfu of the International Center of Kentucky said the U.S. must take a more active role to stop violence in Ethiopia.

“We are calling for immediate intervention by the international community, led by the United States, with all its power and might,” Mbanfu said.

The violence began in the region in early November when Ethiopia’s government, led by Nobel Peace Prize-winner Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, sent troops to the Northern Tigray region.

Abiy claimed there was an attack on a federal military base there, and blamed the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, the faction that controls the region and had controlled the country’s politics until Abiy ascended to power in 2018, according to The TPLF denied playing a role in the attack, and said Abiy was using it as a pretext to invade the region and consolidate his power.

Nearly 50,000 refugees from Tigray have fled into Sudan, the United Nations Refugee Agency said. Another 100,000 or so Eritreans living in refugee camps in the region have also been cut off from food and other aid for weeks now, the Associated Press reported.

News out of the region has been hard to come by since a government-imposed communications blackout cut internet access and phone lines in Tigray. Journalists and humanitarian groups have also had limited access to the region.

“What we know is there is wanton killing right now in the two (refugee) camps that are located in the Tigray region,” Mbanfu said, recounting a story he’d heard from a Tigrayan refugee that soldiers are destroying Tigrayans’ livestock and food. “They cannot survive on anything,” he said.

Thousands of refugees are fleeing into Sudan, which already has 2 million internally displaced people, 1 million refugees, according to the UN.

“It just goes to show that, in our time and age, nearly all refugees come from one poor country to another poor country. It’s the poor countries that give protection, give safe havens to refugees in our time and age,” Jan Egeland, the secretary-general of the Norwegian Refugee Council, told

President Joe Biden recently announced he plans to raise the annual cap on refugee admissions into the country to 125,000 after former President Donald Trump whittled the program down to 15,000 by the time he left office. It’s the lowest amount admitted since passage of the Refugee Act in 1980.

Mbanfu said he was encouraged by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s move to share his concerns about the situation with Prime Minister Abiy and urged him to grant humanitarian aid. Mbanfu called the move “a breath of fresh air,” although former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also voiced his concern about violence in the region.

Still, Mbanfu said the U.S. needs to take a more active role in the conflict by leading a broader international effort to stop the violence.

“The very first visible thing that the U.S. government can do is to galvanize forces around the world to put pressure on the Ethiopian government,” Mbanfu said. “More needs to be done, and urgently, too.”

Salman Khan urged to release ‘Radhe’ only in theatres on Eid by exhibitors

Salman KhanImage Source : TWITTER/FANPAGE

Salman Khan

Amid unconfirmed reports that Salman Khan has sold the satellite, theatrical, digital and music rights of his upcoming Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai for a whopping sum of Rs 230 crore to Zee Studios, cinema hall owners associations have written to the superstar requesting him to release the film only in theatres on Eid 2021. Shared by the exhibitors on Saturday, the letter urged Salman to help the cinema hall sector during its time of struggle amid the ongoing Covid pandemic.

The letter is signed by exhibitors associations from different parts of the country including Uttarakhand, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan Bihar, Telangana, Delhi, Dehradun, and Hyderabad.

Exhibitors believe that the film will be a mass entertainer like most of Salman’s Eid releases. The film can be expected to pull the audience into theatres, especially during a festival like Eid, and aid the struggling exhibition industry that has suffered huge losses during the ongoing pandemic.

The letter reads: “Dear Mr Salman Khan, Hope this letter finds you well. As you are aware, 2020 has been a rough year for millions of people across the country and the ones associated with India’s film exhibition sector haven’t been an exception. Over the last 10 months, hundreds of single screen/independent cinemas have pulled down their shutters permanently and this has resulted in the loss of livelihood for lakhs of people who were employed by them directly and indirectly.

“Films are to theatres what fuel is to a car. Without a constant supply of content that is relevant to its audience, running a cinema hall is close to impossible. For over a decade now, your films have played an important role in bringing audiences to single screen cinemas, which are otherwise starved for content that caters to the sensibilities of people who patronise them.

“Your film Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai is among the few that are capable of resurrecting the fortunes of independent/single screen cinemas across the country. A film like that, if released widely, can give not just financial support and relief but also a ray of hope to owners and employees of theatres in the context of their future. We request you to plan the film’s release at every cinema in the country on Eid 2021 as there cannot be a better Eidi than that for us film exhibitors and more importantly for millions of your fans whom we cannot wait to welcome back at the theatres.

“Till date not even a single case of people contracting Covid-19 has been traced back to a cinema hall anywhere in the world and we are confident of keeping your fans safe by following comprehensive protocols and guidelines that have been issued by the concerned authorities.

“May 2021 bring lots of happiness, love and prosperity to you and your family. In anticipation of your support and on behalf of lakhs of Indians who make a living by working at and for cinema halls,” the letter cioncluded.

Paul King’s ‘Wonka’ Movie Moves Forward at Warner Bros., Announces Release Date

Warner Bros. is returning to a world of pure imagination, forging ahead with plans for a “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” prequel, newly titled “Wonka.”

The project has been in development for years, but recently started to pick up steam again. The studio hopes to begin casting the film soon, with the goal of releasing it theatrically on March 17, 2023.

David Heyman, whose resume includes the “Harry Potter” franchise and “Paddington,” is producing the film, based on a script by Simon Rich. They have both been attached to the movie since 2016. Rich previously worked as a writer on “Saturday Night Live” and penned Seth Rogen’s latest pic, “An American Pickle,” which was based on Rich’s New Yorker short story titled “Sell Out.” Paul King, who directed “Paddington” and its sequel, will helm the reboot. Simon Farnaby co-wrote the script.

Based on Roald Dahl’s popular children’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” the story follows a poor boy named Charlie, who is one of five youngsters to win a golden ticket to tour the world-renowned, yet highly secretive, chocolate factory run by Willy Wonka. Gene Wilder memorably played the character in 1971’s “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” Johnny Depp later portrayed the famed chocolatier in the Tim Burton-directed 2005 reboot, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Depp’s version of the impish character was slightly darker than Wilder’s and heavily portrayed Wonka as an oddball recluse with a particular distaste for kids and by extension, familial bonds. Burton’s version was a commercial success, grossing $475 million at the worldwide box office.

Plot details for “Wonka” have been kept heavily under wraps, though the upcoming adaptation will center on Willy Wonka’s earlier days prior to operating his elaborate house of confectionary creations. In Burton’s retelling, Wonka’s father was a dentist who loathed sugary treats of any kind, though it’s unclear if that’s canon. It’s also uncertain if any other familiar characters, such as the hardworking Oompa Loompas who later keep his sweet-filled factory running, will make an appearance in the movie.

There’s a healthy amount of content currently in the works that centers on the curious and eccentric candyman. Netflix has two animated series in development based on the candy-coated world popularized by Mr. Wonka. Taika Waititi, who directed “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Jojo Rabbit” and the upcoming “Thor: Love and Thunder,” is writing, directing and executive producing both Netflix projects.

AMC Theatres chain owner Wang Jianlin is China’s richest man

Wang Jianlin, the billionaire Chinese real estate developer who acquired AMC Theatres last year, is China’s richest man.

Wang, whose Dalian Wanda Group Co. operates hotels, department stores and cinemas, has a fortune valued at $22 billion, topping the list of wealthiest people in China, according to an annual survey by the Hurun Report.

Dalian Wanda Group last year bought AMC Theatres, the nation’s second-largest theater group, for $2.6 billion, creating the world’s largest theater chain. AMC, based in Leawood, Kan., announced last month it would seek to raise $400 million from an initial public stock offering, using the proceeds to fund acquisitions and pay down debt.

PHOTOS: Highest-paid media executives of 2012

Wang told The Times last year that he planned to invest $10 billion in U.S. companies in the next decade, which could include buying department stores, hotel management companies and at least one more cinema chain. Worldwide, Wanda plans to invest as much as $30 billion in the next decade.

Wang had plenty of company on Hurun’s list of wealthiest people.

Thanks to a surge in stock prices, soaring real estate values and China’s rapidly growing economy, the number of Chinese worth at least $1 billion increased by 64 to 314 this year. There were no billionaires a decade ago, according to the Hurun Report.

Beverage entrepreneur Zong Qinghou, who was last year’s No. 1 richest person, came in second with $18.7 billion, according to the Hurun.

Ma Huateng, founder of online games and entertainment company Tencent Inc., ranked third on the list with a fortune valued at $10.1 billion. He was followed by Wei Jianjun, chairman of Great Wall Motor Co., at $8.4 billion.

A quarter of the 1,021 people on the Hurun List made their money from real estate, which passed manufacturing to become this year’s leading source of wealth. Hurun said 559 of those on the list saw their wealth grow while 252 saw their fortunes shrink.
