Arab held for ‘vexing’ young bride | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: In a further expose of how young women from the city are falling prey to contract marriages with wealthy Arab sheikhs, the Chandrayangutta police on Tuesday arrested a 60-year-old UAE national for duping his new 19-year-old bride from the city.
Mohammad Jaffer, a United Arab Emirates national, was accused by his wife Haseena Begum, of harassing her and demanding dowry. Jaffer was married to Haseena of Asmabad on May 7 and the couple began living in a rented house at Barkas.
Inspector G Ramanjaneyulu said Haseena”s parents willingly offered their daughter to Jaffer. He said a Qazi from Jahanuma Charchaman, Ahmed Sharief, performed the nikah ceremony.
Police inquiries, however, revealed that Jaffer, who is blind in one eye and having health problems, already has two wives in the UAE. He came to the city earlier this month and a broker took him to Shaikh Mahboob, Haseena”s father, who has retired as a railway class-IV employee.
Police sources said Mahboob, father of six, was looking for a suitable match for Haseena, but could not find one as the local grooms were demanding dowry. When the broker told him about the offer from the Arab sheikh, he was pleased and readily accepted the proposal.
The sources said Jaffer gave Rs 10,000 to Mahboob and married Haseena with the help of Qazi Ahmed Sahrief. The broker, whom the police are now looking for, arranged a rented house for the couple”s stay.
However, differences cropped up between Jaffer and Haseena a day after the marriage, as the the former began harassing her. Unable to bear the harassment, Haseena went to her parents” house and lodged a police complaint.
The Chadrayangutta police booked a case against Jaffer under section 498 (A) (dowry harassment) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC.
Haseena, in her complaint, alleged that Jaffer had married several young women from the city in the past through a contract system and later left them. She demanded a thorough probe into the Arab”s antecedents.
Inspector Ramanjaneyulu said Jaffer”s passport showed the number of trips he made to India, but they are yet to come across cases of cheating against him. “We are questioning Jaffer on that count too ,” he said.
